This familiar and recognizable species of seal is protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and the Endangered Species Act, due to the annual slaughter and hunting of the species by Alaskan natives. Their biggest threat currently is rising climate change. The uncertainty of ice formation affects many aspects of the ice dependent seal such as, prey availability and the quantity of sea ice needed for daily feeding and other activities, like breeding and resting.
